About our families work

Families outdoors and at home, newborns included. These sessions fall apart when they are run like a wedding portrait list, because small children do not hold a pose and the harder anyone pushes the more the pictures look like everybody is being held hostage.

So we run them loose. We pick a time when the light is good and the children are not yet finished, usually the last hour before sunset or a morning slot for the very small ones. The group frame gets taken early, while everyone is still fresh, because that is the one grandparents want. After that it turns into whatever it turns into.

An at home session with a new baby is worth more than a studio one. The room itself is the thing that changes and then is gone, and in ten years the sofa and the light through your own windows will date the photographs in a way a backdrop never will.

Most of this work happens across the Fox Valley: meadows and prairie paths around Geneva, Batavia and Elburn, back gardens, and living rooms in DuPage County.
