July 2026 / Prairie meadow, Kane County
A proposal in a wildflower field
Queen Anne's lace up to the waist, a storm sky coming in, and her hands over her face.
Kane County has prairie restorations that come up shoulder high in July, and for about three weeks a year they are the best location within half an hour of Geneva. We had that window and a forecast that was going to close it.
The sky did what we hoped. The violet band that came over the field about twenty minutes in is not a filter, it is the front arriving. We kept shooting into it.
The frame with her hands over her face is the one they printed. It is not the sharpest picture from the session and it does not matter, because it is the only one where you can see exactly what she felt.
For anyone planning something similar: the hardest part of a proposal shoot is not the photography, it is the walk up to it. She needs a reason to be there that holds, and it has to be a reason that survives him behaving strangely for ten minutes beforehand. The ones that go smoothest are the ones where the location was already somewhere they went anyway.
