Family sessions fall apart when they are run like a wedding portrait list. Small children do not hold a pose, and the harder you push the more the pictures look like everyone is being held hostage.
So we run them loose. We pick a time of day when the light is good and the children are not yet finished, usually the last hour or so before sunset, or a morning slot for the very small ones. We get the group frame early while everybody is still fresh, because that is the one grandparents want, and then we let it turn into whatever it turns into. Kids running, being carried, arguing about who sits where. That is the part you will actually want in ten years.
We shoot these in meadows and prairie paths around the Fox Valley, in back gardens, and increasingly at home. An at home session with a new baby is worth more than a studio one, because the room itself is the thing that changes and then is gone.
